I just about gave up on this week's Kinder Garden post. But finally, Week 11, here we go!

We've got LOTS of tomatoes!!!
I think I'll make some salsa this week. Anybody got a killer recipe?
Ella's favorite thing to do with tomatoes is to throw them on the floor as hard as she can.
The one in her hand went "splat!".
We've really enjoyed our squash and zucchini. I've eaten zucchini fries (AWESOME!), zucchini bread, zucchini stir fry and even zucchini brownies (YUMMY!). We've had lots of squash in our stir fry too.
Speaking of squash...
We've officially declared war on squash bugs around here.
It makes me so sad.
My desire to be an organic farmer went out the freakin' window when I found this plant. Up until this week, we'd been picking the nasty bugs off the plants as we found them. Checking daily. But when I saw this plant, I broke out the Seven Dust with no holds barred. I guess I was not mentally prepared to be an organic farmer. I want those suckers dead. It's war, you know.
The other night at bed time, Miles wanted me to tell him a story. It went a little something like this...
"Once upon a time, there was a super hero named Super Miles. He traveled across the land protecting gardens and all the growing fruits and vegetables. When the plants were attacked, Miles would come to the rescue and get rid of all those pesky bugs! One time, when squash bugs attacked all the squash and zucchini plants in the land, Super Miles came and killed all the squash bugs so they couldn't hurt the plants anymore! And all the people were so happy because Super Miles saved the day. The End."
He's taken the story quite literally...
He loves that whole "save the day" part.
And so, with my little super hero in tow, on we fight for the sake of the garden.

BWWWWAAAHHHHHAAAAHHHAAA!!! Miles, err, Super Miles CRACKS ME UP!! I love it. love it, love it, love it! Way to go after those squash bugs!!
Ha! I LOVE Super Miles! :)
Do you want fresh salsa, or salsa to can? We have a good canning recipe, I can send it to you if you like.
I totally understand about the squash bugs. They have decimated my pumpkins and gourds in previous years. We are trying again this year, and I will be pulling out the big (non-organic) guns if they show up in force. Good luck with your war! :)
(p.s. I love looking at your pictures - so beautiful!)
Heather told me Ben gets $1 for every squash bug he kills. That sounded a little high to me...until squash bugs sucked the life out of my only yellow squash plant that was full of little baby squash. Now I'm wondering if she would hire him out. :)
Yeah for garden super-heroes...especially those with the power to read and the power to kill squash bugs dead!
Rock on...Kim
I HATE squash bugs and they are the reason I no longer grow squash. Even with Sevin dust and chemicals they will LIVE! How can a little black bug be invinceable???
Love all your tomatoes. This is a link to the very best salsa you will ever eat. Make it and see for yourself.

So wonderful are the days when the man-child can save the day with determination, a smile and a hug!! I think I will try it again with my 15 and 17 yo boys and see if it still works! Thanks for the beautiful reminder of the softer/kinder techniques of motherhood!
